Getting to know you at AdSense In Your City events

During this summer, a few of us on the North America AdSense team had the pleasure of meeting publishers in person during AdSense in Your City events. First, we stopped by our office in Boulder, Colorado to provide publishers with AdSense updates and tips (and we fell in love with the city as well!). We then headed to our offices in Toronto and New York to host a series of similar events for local publishers. It was a busy week, but we thoroughly enjoyed the valuable face-to-face time with you.

While our goal during these events is to provide information to you, we also learn a lot from our attendees. We asked a few participants some questions about AdSense and the event, and here’s what they had to say:

What is your favorite thing about AdSense?
“Depth of advertisers. Allows me to do what I do best.” Darren O.
“AdSense was the easiest and most effective way to monetize my site.” Andrew D.

What did you learn from the AdSense in Your City event?
“I’m very interested in DoubleClick for Publishers Small Business. Right now I use a more limited ad server and I can likely increase CPM with better technology.” Darren O.
“It always amazes me how you can learn more about optimizing your revenue when attending Google sessions like this. It helped me focus on AdSense issues I have neglected over time. I will definitely implement and test some changes that were suggested. Also, I have met other publishers and learned from them.” Max L.

What tip do you have for other publishers?
“Jump in and try it [AdSense] - it’s super easy.” Darren O.
“Simple changes such as color and ad position have increased my CTR by over 30%.” Andrew D.

Thanks for providing candid feedback and we hope to continue hearing from you. We’ll be visiting other cities through our AdSense in Your City program, so make sure you’re opted in to our mailings so we can inform you about upcoming events!

Key policy takeaways from AdSense in Your City

If you follow our AdSense blog you may have heard about our AdSense in Your City events. We love the opportunity to meet publishers in person, hear first-hand feedback and gauge reactions to new AdSense features. At one of the most recent events in our Zurich office, we offered workshops on the Google AdSense program policies where we gained a deeper understanding of your concerns and questions around our policies and policy enforcement processes. To help spread the message to those unable to attend, we wanted to share a few things from the workshops on the Inside AdSense blog:
  • We enforce our program policies on a site and account level. It’s definitely worth reading this ‘AdSense Facts & Fiction: Program Policies’ post to learn more about our policy enforcement processes.
  • We have a lot of information in our help center regarding some of the notifications we send publishers. These help center entries also contain links to forms, which you can use to get in touch with us:
    • Received a notification asking you to make changes within three business days: Here is a detailed overview on what you need to do and know. Please keep in mind that you don’t need to let us know if you have simply fixed the violation.
    • Ad-serving has been disabled to your site: Read our Help Center article for more information on why this may have happened.
    • Received a notification stating your AdSense account may be disabled: By reading this information you may be able to get your AdSense account back in good standing.
    • Your AdSense account has been disabled: AdSense accounts can be disabled for different reasons. If you’d like to appeal the decision, be sure to use the right appeal form.
    • You’d like to report a policy violation: Our team is happy to investigate any policy violations submitted through these forms.
  • We send email notifications whenever we need to enforce our program policies, so make sure to check the email address associated with your AdSense account regularly. Alternatively, you can also view all policy notifications by visiting the Messages page, under the Home tab when you sign in to your AdSense account.
  • Some publishers have been contacted because AdSense ads had been placed next to comment spam entries on their blogs and forums. While we understand that no publisher intentionally allows their blogs and forums to be spammed, we ask that you ensure no ads are placed on these pages - as you can imagine advertisers don’t want their ads shown in this context. Check out the Webmaster Central blogpost and this help center article to learn how to combat comment spam effectively.
  • Make sure you use the right AdSense product! We have a range of AdSense products these days, from the traditional AdSense for content to AdSense for feeds. This might seem obvious, but in the past, for example, we’ve seen publishers use AdSense for content ad code within mobile applications. If you’d like to understand why this is important, please read this blog post. Here is a complete overview of all of our current AdSense products.
We’d like to thank all of your for your great feedback and questions, and look forward to meeting many more of you. Make sure that you’re opted in to ‘Special Offers’ in your email preferences under the ‘My Account’ tab within your AdSense account so we can let you know about future events in your area!

Great speeches, great people, great atmosphere: AdSense in Zurich

Two weeks ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming 120 of our publishers from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and France at an AdSense publisher event in our Google office in Zurich.

The agenda of the day included seminars and presentations about:
  • Trends in the online advertising market and how to use them for your site
  • Our best tips to optimize your AdSense earnings
  • Using DFP Small Business to get more out of AdSense
  • Website usability
  • The truth about common SEO myths

We also offered attendees 1-on-1 site consultations with a Google AdSense optimization specialist and ended the day by kicking back with pizza and beer to get to know one another a little better!

It was great to meet you in person to learn more about your businesses and experience with AdSense. We were thrilled to hear positive feedback from the attendees on the event and hope to offer a similar opportunity in a city near you soon!

Lunching, learning & optimizing in your city

Over the past three weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to meet a bunch of you in person. Through events in San Francisco, Mountain View, Charlotte and Atlanta, we’ve been able to see and optimize some incredible sites, as well as learn directly from you how we can continue to improve your experience with AdSense.

In San Francisco, around 50 publishers joined us in our office to network with one another, work with our optimization specialists, and chat with members of our Policy team for our first AdSense in Your City event of 2011. Since San Francisco is also our city, it was great to meet some local publishers, and watch some business connections form over coffee and snacks in our downtown office.

Mountain View welcomed around 20 new publishers to the Google campus so we could learn more about their experience getting started with AdSense. After discussing some great optimization tips as a group, we got a lot of invaluable feedback over lunch that will enable us to improve the newbie experience for the next generation of AdSensers. Deep diving into our help resources, the new AdSense interface, and our interactive learning materials, we got a lot of suggestions we can act on to improve the way we communicate and teach new publishers to set up and optimize their AdSense implementation. We’d love to hear more ideas about how we can make your first weeks as a publisher better, so feel free to leave us a comment here or join the conversation in our forum.

We just got back to sunny California after two quick days meeting publishers down South. Hosting optimization office hours at a funky Charlotte, NC coffee shop and then jetting off to meet more publishers in our Atlanta office the following day, we covered a lot of ground in an area of the country booming with awesome websites, interesting people, tasty food, and vibrant culture. Two days wasn’t nearly enough time for us to soak it all in, but we were able to leave having provided some great optimization tips to an area of the country that we don’t often get to see in person.

And the journey doesn’t stop here -- we’re planning to visit more cities in 2011, so leave us a comment with where you think we should go next. We hope to see you in your city soon!

AdSense in Your City is coming to Charlotte

In 2010 we kicked off the AdSense in Your City program by visiting and optimizing more than 400 publishers in six different US cities. We loved getting to meet you face to face, and are very excited to head down South this March to provide even more of you with personalized optimization tips!

On Wednesday, March 9, a few of our optimizers will be in Charlotte, North Carolina to hold 20-minute optimization sessions at a local coffee shop between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. We’re going to keep it casual, so we can provide one-on-one consultations to as many of you as possible.

We’d love to meet you, so please fill out this form if you’ll be in the Charlotte, NC area on March 9 and would like to schedule an appointment with our team. Once we get your RSVP, we'll follow up via email with additional details if there's still room. Scheduling will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, but we’ll do our best to include as many of you as space will allow.

Hope to see you in Charlotte!

Getting to know you at AdSense in Your City: Seattle

Last week, three other AdSensers and I went up to Seattle for our sixth AdSense in Your City event. After visiting Mountain View, Santa Monica, Chicago, New York, and Boston over the summer, we didn’t want our publishers in the Pacific Northwest to feel left out!

Greeted with beautiful weather on Wednesday, we spent the day at a coffee shop meeting those of you who were free to drop in for a one-on-one consultation. Over pastries and cappuccinos, we chatted with publishers about ways they can earn more with AdSense, learning their stories and providing optimization tips. Everyone we met was incredibly friendly, sharing how AdSense has allowed their business to grow and offering suggestions to help us make the most of our time in Seattle. After checking out the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, we headed back to Kirkland to gear up for another day of optimizations.

We were thrilled to have publishers from Washington, Oregon, and Canada join us on Thursday for the event at our Kirkland office. Splitting up the group for optimizations, half consulted with us on their sites, while the others networked with each other, swapping stories about their own AdSense experiences and sharing tips and tricks. It was a great way for everyone (including us!) to learn something new and make some great connections.

We hope to hold more AdSense in Your City events in the coming months so we can continue to meet more of you in your hometowns. Want AdSense to come to your city? Leave us a comment to tell us where you are!

AdSense in Your City is coming to Seattle
